Optical Network

Author: admin | Filed under: Communiations, Networking, Technology

There is no doubt that the fiber communication is our future. Fiber optic communications industry, an amazing growth for over 15 years. This is then processed by the technology advance, and the demand of the market. There are clear trends in the development of new technologies and the market. We have some of the most important here.

All-Optical Network

All-optical network is a top issue in optical fibres for the industry for more than a decade now. Its aim is to give all signals in the field of optics, without conversion and control for all electrical field.

At least at the moment is the most signal routing, treatment and placement services happens in the electrical field. Optical signals are converted into electrical signals and then converted to electrical signals, and transported to their destination.

After treatment, transport and switching, the electrical signals are then converted into optical signals are then over long distances. This process is known as E-O-O.

But this process OEO limiting the speed of the network. Why? Since optical signals can process data much faster, so today in electronics. The OEO was an obstacle that prevents that we achieve even higher data rates.

This congestion is a very great interest in all-optical networks in the absence of the electronics are needed to signal, routing and switching. Another big advantage for all-optical network is that all signalling, routing and optical happening in this area is not required if the electronic data rising interest rates. For example, the optical fibre transmitter and receiver can only provide a data rate, so they must be replaced if the throughput increased. That is not necessary, all in an optical network.

But many obstacles are still in our nature to do everything an optical network in reality. Some functions such as playing over the heads of optical signals, the optical signals on the fly, based on the head and content in real-time change the wavelength are just some of the serious problems to be resolved before we have a real everything — optical network.

Multi-terabit networks

DWDM opens the door to multi-terabit transmission. The interest in the development of multi-terabit networks, the increasing availability of more bandwidth of the network of fiber.

A terabit network, with 10 Gb / s data rate combined with 100 DWDM channels.

Four terabit network can be achieved combing 40Gb / s data rate with 100 DWDM channels. The researchers also their goal with a wider bandwidth of 100 GB / s. (What is still not a reality, at least for the moment)

But this kind of speed is very expensive, and can not be justified on long-haul flights. But with the reduction of costs for the fiber components, equipment and systems, more bandwidth is not far away from us.

There are other key trends in the industry in the glass fiber. The most important are the expansion in the markets of the mass (FTTH, FTTB, FTTC, etc.), miniaturization, the development of new technologies that reduce costs and more.
